11 independent Australian designers showcased their talents at The Fringe Club in Hong Kong this August with the aid of TFIA (Textile & Fashion Industries or Australia) who together initiated the development of sustainable export opportunities for Australian’s into Hong Kong.

Their innovative exploration of Fashion and Textiles not only takes these Australian’s abroad and into quite a different fashion scene, but opens us here in Hong Kong up to an aesthetic and fashion ethos that we can embrace in a way that extends our notion of the world-wide fashion industry.

Read on to find out a little more about the designers that are etching their mark into the Asian Fashion Industry…

DESIGNER: Roman & Ludmila

WEBSITE: www.romanandludmila.com

ABOUT: Trust me, you ALREADY know this brand – just under a different name!

Roman & Ludmila is the original ‘Ugg’ boot, who have been proudly crafting their Australian sheepskin footwear since 1981.  A little insiders note…

UGG is registered to two parties – Roman & Ludmila in Australia, and beyond Australia the name ’Ugg’ is registered to a different company (and sells a similar product).  Which is why ‘Roman & Ludmila’ is now taking their three generation deep heritage, their hard work and their Australian raw materials abroad under the branding: ‘Roman & Ludmila’.

Their tannery is quite literally the ONLY sheepskin footwear tannery left in Australia and it embodies their cultural history equally as much as it engages modern innovation.

The brands story is incredibly interesting and Hong Kong fashionista’s do READ MORE HERE about their background.

It’s not only a beautiful story, but one that raises the standard of…

DESIGNER: Morgan Marks

WEBSITE: www.morganmarks.com.au

ABOUT:  Morgan Marks holds a dark edginess that is very much the signature to her designs and true to the off-beat aesthetics that are strongly worn by Australians.  Her line is very contemporary, and yet holds an element of a trans-seasonal nature that allows her work to flow effortlessly from one year to the next without dating.

A lover of somber prints and as mentioned, a darker and almost mono-toned colour pallet, Morgan Marks brought to Hong Kong a line that stay’s true to the Australian taste for fine fabrication and quality.  Her work floats around the female form, alluring to the shape that’s underneath but never restricting it with tightness…

DESIGNER:  Basquesse

WEBSITE:  www.basquesse.com

ABOUT:  This theatrical line plays host to elaborate display of lace, beading, colour-ways and structure.  The trimmings used are as flamboyant and playful as the designer herself, Viviana Pannell, and hold just the same amount of European charm (which is her heritage – Australia now being her base).

Her line represents the most whimsical and feminine of dressers, fitting them in a way that flatters their form.  Her garments are cut in a way that can’t always be appreciated to their full on the hanger – as these dresses quite literally transform themselves once on the body.
