Dress Me recently sat with one of the DJ’s that has shaped Hong Kong to be a musical playground for the seriously trend-setting vibesters amongst us – Mr Ivan Sit (resident DJ at KEE Club).
Now if your anything like me, the top 10 pop charts that span over the last three decades played at most of the Lan Kwai Fong pubs and bars are less than mediocre and don’t inspire anything but Jelly-shots and 4am MacDonalds – NOT the most classiest – making true music masters like Ivan, sought after composers of the HK night life!
DressMe: I’ve been caught out foot-thumping, and hip-swaying mid-conversation in time with beats you play (LOVE your stuff!) – how would you describe your music to others?

Ivan: “It’s quite hard to describe my music by just a few words and terms… I would like to say my roots of music are jazz, soul, funk, disco so I can play old school disco-boogie-electro-funk-rare-grooves to nu-jazz, hip hop, deep house to nu-disco…”
DressMe: Where do you drive your inspiration from?

Ivan: “Dirty and Sexy = PASSION”
DressMe: A good DJ knows his crowd and can read the environment – what do you look out for when entertaining the crowds at KEE Club?

Ivan: “Actually kee clubbers are quality, music lovers, stylish and respect each others and DJs so much. It’s a unique place in Hong Kong for cool people with quality music. We get interactive via the music at club nights, and then just build up a music journey together from there.”
DressMe: As one of Hong Kong’s music masters – do you have to ‘dress-up’ to match your reputation? What’s a typical ‘DJ look’ for you?

Ivan: “A hat! It’s my signature…people don’t recognize me if I’mwithout a hat…..hahhaa”
DressMe: Can you tell me your Fashion (STYLE) idols and your MUSIC idols – do they mix together at all?

Ivan: “Actually I don’t have any fashion idols but I like Raf Simons products.
For the music, it is so many…..such as Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Karizma, Jamie Jones, Kerri Chandler, Dimitri, Greg Wilson… I respect the kind of DJs that can play and produce anything whatever old and new, and also re-edits/ reworks the old stuffs to educate the young people and DJs.”
DressMe: What are the essential things you don’t leave the house with?

Ivan: “Hahaha…. Should be wallet (money!!!) and 2 x 32GB USB flash drive for the jamming of DJs!”
