LOMOGRAPHY
Definition: A type of art photography in which color is emphasized. Traditionally, cameras such as the Lomo are used to create strange and unusual photographs. Lomographic photos are primarily characterized by vignettes (blurry and faded edges), random subjects, and nonadherance to traditional photography rules.
Lomography is a pleasant break from most photojournalism.
LOMOGRAPHY Asia recently invited the #HKFashionBloggers to a ‘Bloggers Party’ – a fabulous diversion from our computer screens and obsessive trend reporting!
With fellow fashion photographer, Savia Chan at my side, I ventured down the backstreets of Sheung Wan, Hong Kong trying to locate the Lomography store – which turned out to be a beacon in the darkness and a bright contrast to it’s surrounding stores.
NOTE: They have a tendency to break the rules and lean more towards the off beat and unexpected!
On arrival we were presented with fake mustaches, photo-props of which the likes of batman masks and Hello Kitty bows were a plenty! There was vino, there was chocolate and there where A LOT of trigger happy people sporting cameras of crazy colours – highlighter and old school being the consistent theme.
An in-store briefing of the history, a funky slide-show and the distribution of cameras for ALL -flouro yellow being the camera of chance that I happily took on as my new fav accessory!
Sprocket Rockets and fashion bloggers – we’re all about statements and these designer cameras are all that and more!
Armed with our bright and bulky film (yes FILM) operated cameras, we all stepped out on the streets to click away, capturing anything and everything – remembering that in Lomo, there are NO rules! Make a mistake and it’s dubbed perfection in the lens of lomo!
With my yellow camera and a new found confidence to capture life with analogue, that Friday night continued to take on a whole new spin as on my film, a rather Alice in Wonderland evening was caught.
I have to say the glowing cauldron cocktails in the sultry corners of Halo (thaaaaaaaks to Night-Life blogger Paul.S!) helped initiate a weirdness that only heightened the cameras recording methods. The proof of Lomo’s quirky-fabulousness are in the below pictures…
SPOTTED: The #HKFashionBloggers at HALO – @superwowomg, @anywearstyle, @thewunderlister, @thestylevoyger, @carmenhan, @samishome, @tlikebubbletea @fashionhedoism
My verdict: A MUST HAVE for those with a creative edge and a willingness to explore boundaries and break the rules!
